WHAT IS A FILLING?
Fillings are used to restore function to teeth that have a small amount of decay. Fillings can be made from composite resin, amalgam, porcelain or gold. Generally, fillings are used to treat cavities. However, more serious cavities may require a porcelain crown. When you get a filling, your dentist will remove the area of tooth that is decayed, clean the area and fill it with the filling material. At Modern Family Dental Care, our filling material of choice is the white composite resin that will match the color of your tooth.
WHY ARE THERE DIFFERENT TYPES OF FILLINGS?
Your dentist will discuss with you the different materials used in the various types of fillings. Each individual that needs a dental filling has several options, and it’s important to discuss the pros and cons of each option with your dentist.
Amalgam. Silver in color, amalgam filling is made of several types of metal. This is an inexpensive option, but may lead to tooth sensitivity.
Composite. Composite fillings are the most natural-looking filling option. Composite fillings are effective for smaller cavities, but may stain from coffee or tea unlike other filling options.
Ceramic (porcelain). More expensive than amalgam and composite fillings, ceramic fillings are made in a dental lab to precisely fit your cavity. This is a long-lasting option, but may take longer to get than other fillings since it is made specifically for your tooth.
Gold. Gold fillings are the most expensive option. This type of filling is extremely durable and tarnish resistant. Gold fillings are made in a lab like ceramic fillings.

DENTAL FILLING FAQS
1) Is getting a dental filling painful?
Many people do not feel anything when getting a dental filling. However, some people have more sensitivity than others and may feel minor discomfort. In some cases, local anesthesia is used.
2) How long do dental fillings last?
How long a dental filling lasts depends on how well you take care of it at home. With proper home hygiene and periodic 6 month checkups at the dentist, there is no reason why the filling should not last for a very long time. Amalgams tend to last around 13 years, while composite filling’s average lifespan is around 8 years. With time, all fillings will need to be replaced.
3) What is a temporary dental filling?
Temporary fillings are used if a patient has to wait multiple appointments to receive a designed filling, for example a gold or ceramic filling. This ensures cavities do not remain exposed until a more permanent, long-lasting solution can be completed.
