Diabetics are More Likely to Contract Gum Disease

Diabetics are More Likely to Contract Gum DiseaseMost diabetics are aware of the common health risks related to their disease. The eyes, heart, and kidneys are three major concerns of those living with diabetes. But there are other health risks that come into play when dealing with this disease, and one of those health risks is gum disease.

Gum disease might seem more or less unrelated to diabetes, but diabetics have a much higher risk of getting periodontal disease than most people. Periodontal disease can include infections in the gums and the bones that hold the teeth in their proper positions. This disease, left untreated, can lead to all sorts of serious dental problems; from painful chewing to tooth loss.

How is Diabetes Connected to Gum Disease?

Gum disease is linked to the regulation of blood sugar. When there are issues with poor blood sugar control, the risk for periodontal disease increases tremendously. Diabetes can also cause gum disease to arise more frequently and more severely. This is the main reason why diabetics should have regular dental checkups and inform their dentist of their diagnosis.

In addition to regular dental checkups, diabetics should always remain under a doctor’s care and on a healthy eating and lifestyle regimen to assist in controlling their blood sugar. It is the lack of blood sugar control that exacerbates the risks of periodontal issues and their severity.

Those living with diabetes may also experience a thickening of the blood vessels. Blood vessels deliver oxygen and nourishment throughout the body, including the mouth. When blood vessels begin to thicken due to lack of diabetic control, it becomes more difficult for oxygen and nourishment to be delivered to various parts of the body, and also disturbs the elimination process of waste and toxins. If this occurs, bone and gum tissue can weaken and become more prone to infection.

It is vital for diabetics to stick to the medical and nutritional regimen given to them if they are going to maintain the health of their teeth and gums.
