5 Common Toothbrushing Mistakes

5 Common Toothbrushing MistakesBrushing your teeth should be a “this-goes-without-saying” part of your daily routine. If we want to have good oral health it is imperative to brush at least twice a day. But many people are really still in the dark about brushing practices. Here are five common mistakes people make that you should avoid.

Your Toothbrush

Getting just the right brush for the size of your mouth is so important. You shouldn’t have to be uncomfortable while brushing. Many folks think that a bigger toothbrush covers more area and cuts down on brushing time. A brush that is too big is only going to frustrate and annoy you, and you’re likely to brush for less time. Also, most dentists recommend you use a soft bristled brush. Many people think a stiff or firm toothbrush is going to remove more plaque. What it will remove is the enamel that protects your teeth.

Brushing Time

Many of us just go into the bathroom, pick our toothbrushes, and do a quick in-and-out. Proper brushing time is at least 2 minutes. You want to remove debris, stimulate the gums, and clean your tongue. If you think about it, 2 minutes is really no time at all, and you will be happy with the results.

How Many Times?

Many people only brush once or twice a day, but the recommended number is actually 3 times a day.

Too much brushing will remove enamel, and too little won’t clean your mouth. If you stick to 3 times a day, once after each meal, you will be doing the best for your teeth and gums.

Brushing Technique

Too many times we see characters on television brushing their teeth from side to side. This is incorrect technique, and it can damage your gums. The best way to brush is with a gentle up and down motion. Using short strokes brush the outside and inside of all your teeth. And remember to brush your tongue as well to remove bacteria.

When to Get a New Toothbrush

You may be fond of your toothbrush, but you should use it no longer than 3 months. Bristles wear down and get bent out of shape, and no matter how well you clean your brush after each brushing, it begins to collect bacteria. So switch it up every 2 to 3 months.

Brushing your teeth should not be a chore. It should feel like something you are doing for your overall health and well-being. Your oral health can affect your entire body, and so a clean mouth not only gives you a beautiful smile, it also ensures that harmful mouth bacteria will not travel through your system. Listen to your dentist, and employ proper brushing techniques. You will feel good about yourself for taking good care of your body.
